DLSS 5 Swapper for RDR2: API and Install Checks
Check DLSS 5 Swapper setup for Red Dead Redemption 2, distinguish the launcher from the game, match DX12 or Vulkan, and review version-specific issues.
Identify the game and its current renderer
Start with a Red Dead Redemption 2 single-player setup. Record your game build, storefront or launcher, GPU, driver, selected renderer, and existing mods. Red Dead Online has separate modification rules.
Find the actual RDR2.exe used by your installation rather than selecting only the Rockstar launcher. Do not assume every store places it in the same directory. The v2.2.2 release notes describe reading RDR2’s system.xml to identify the renderer. Confirm that it agrees with the game’s current setting.
Match the route to the active API
RDR2’s DX12 and Vulkan choices are not interchangeable installation targets. Read the project’s current route instructions, check your GPU and component conditions, and select the route that actually supports the chosen renderer.
If changing API or replacing an installed route, close the game and restore the previous installation first. Keep _DLSS5_Backup and a record of other loaders. Do not install a second consumer over an existing one and infer compatibility from the game appearing in a library scan.
For a native route, verify the relevant in-game DLSS input setting. The compact F8 overlay is limited to its documented DX11/DX12 setups; its absence under Vulkan is not a sufficient diagnosis.
Read the version history without mixing reports
| Report or release | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Issue 14 | An older renderer-detection problem | That current versions must use a DX9 workaround |
| v2.2.2 renderer detection | RDR2 configuration inspection was improved | A measured successful result for your game build |
| v2.2.6 native fix | Corrects the consumer installed by the v2.2.5 native route | That updating the desktop app replaces every existing game file |
| Issue 281 | A failure after application and driver changes | Which single change caused every similar failure |
| Issue 189 | A specific overlay / Smooth Motion discussion | A universally successful profile workaround |
For the v2.2.5 consumer problem, follow the documented same-route reinstall after updating. See the update procedure.
Verify a controlled single-player scene
Launch through your normal launcher and confirm that the expected game executable and renderer run. Check component loading, connection where applicable, and a fixed scene with the effect enabled and disabled. Record artifacts, stability, and frame pacing separately.
These checks follow project documentation and reported issues; they have not been tested here against a current RDR2 build. Confirm loading, visual output, and stability on your setup before keeping the changes.
Recover or investigate the remaining failure
If RDR2 crashes, preserve the logs and use the crash isolation sequence. Close the game, choose Restore originals, and verify normal play with the same API before trying another configuration.
Follow complete recovery if you are removing the tool. For online permissions, consult the account-risk discussion; technical success in single-player does not establish permission for an online mode.
